Bee on the Team (BOTT) is NTC Research Foundation’s program designed to provide an integrated in-school Science, Technology, Engineering and Math educational experience for elementary school-aged students. BOTT brings three trusted names in education together to deliver hands-on, in-class instruction combined with after school community-based STEM teams and leagues. The BOTT program is tied together by the motivational and social norming impact of live educational theatre. Combining the excitement of the Arts with an innovative approach to STEM results in a robust STEAM experience. Under the stewardship of the NTC Research Foundation, students, teachers and families all benefit from the expertise of:
BOTT, kicks off with a live, theatrical event at each participating school, which introduces STEM information through sketch comedy and audience participation. The thrill of live theatre sparks energetic and intense interest in the subjects presented. The school events are supplemented by print and digital curriculum. Through performances by professional actor/educators, student playbooks and teacher guides, digital games and activities, in-class discussion and homework assignments designed to engage parents, students will be armed with explicit STEM information and be encouraged to join one of the FIRST® LEGO® League Jr. Teams forming right in their school.
After the live event, each classroom teacher uses the WeDo 2.0 curriculum for 8 to 12 weeks. Through project-based activities from LEGO® Education, students’ skills are enhanced across science, engineering, technology and coding. Student enthusiasm drives parents to enroll their children in the FIRST® LEGO® League Jr. portion of the program. Guided by two or more adult coaches, 6 member teams of K-5 students explore real-world scientific problems, create a Show Me poster that illustrates their journey of discovery, and construct a motorized model of what they learned using LEGO® elements. The culminating event for the FIRST® LEGO® League Jr. program is a FIRST® LEGO® League Jr. Expo. An Expo provides team members with an opportunity to showcase what they have learned with their families, friends and community in a fun, non-competitive event. At an Expo, team members share their personal experience with the Challenge topic and what they learned by working as members of a team.
Through BOTT, students learn about teamwork, the wonders of science and technology, and the vital 21st century learning skills: collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity.
